Welcome to the NZFF May 2012 Screenshot Competition.

Please read the rules before entering.

1) The screenshot image must consist of a screen captured from a Flight Simulator program (FS2004 or FSX,) and the position of the shot must be from somewhere within the New Zealand territory.

2) Some editing is allowed (if you know how to do it.) Additional images - either screenshots or "real" images can be added - but the main component of the image should always be of a Flight sim screen capture.

3) The images must be jpg and size must be at least 1024 pixels wide and no wider than 1280 pixels -- A good free resizing program can be found at http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm.
No txt or borders on the image. Please keep a high resolution version saved on your computer that can be cropped to fit the banner; the admin may request it from you at the end of the month to convert into a site banner!

4) Images can be submitted from May 1st until midnight 31st May 2012, with only one entry of a single image per member.
You can change your image anytime up until 1 hour before the closing time.
To change use the edit button at the bottom of your post, just delete the old one and replace it with a new one If you post comments using the quote or reply button please edit out all images from your reply or quote.

If you have any queries about the rules please PM me for clarification before posting your entry.

5) Soon after the competition ends, a poll will open for members to decide who has the best image, and then the winner will have a cropped version of their image appear in the NZFF banner as well as receiving the prize for the month.

6) This month being May the theme is: “MAY-DAY MAY-DAY” (Please state Aircraft details and the area of New Zealand the image was taken)

I ask all members to please patronize all our very generous prize sponsors.

As always, great shots folks!

This is my first ever screenshot competition entry - please don't be too harsh! unsure.gif Dash-8 NZ2783 climbing out of NZHK enroute to NZCH and suffering an engine fire...

I have just read the rules and it says no borders or text on the image except this is the only one I have an I don't currently have any editiing software to remove them sad.gif May I be excused mods? My sincere apologies!

ScottyB

Ian Warren
Scotty , take your screen but pressing the default 'v' key for your screen , it will do it for you with out placing any text or borders , that is all that's needed or required .

Welcome to the screencomp, Scotty! Always good to see new blood winkyy.gif

You'll need to check uncle Doug's instructions. Cropping is OK. The most important thing IMHO is to treat it as a screen PIC contest, rather than a BANNER competition. ie. Don't worry too much about the shape/aspect ratio of the pic. Doug can usually do wonders to make the pic fit the banner shape. Don't forget to keep your hi-res original (also useful if I need to create a Splash Pic from it).

Hi Scotty from the police.gif rules.gif OK your first shot at the screenshot comp but you must read the rules before you enter and rule 3) The images must be jpg and size must be at least 1024 pixels wide and no wider than 1280 pixels -- A good free resizing program can be found at http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm.
No txt or borders on the image. Please keep a high resolution version saved on your computer that can be cropped to fit the banner; the admin may request it from you at the end of the month to convert into a site banner!
If you want to enter that image you will need to do an edit and re crop it to take out all the txt and border.
You have the software to add the txt and border you should be able to use it to take the txt and border off again.

I'll leave the decision up to Doug, but I'd definitely be looking for another image if I were you. Your shot doesn't meet the minimum width requirements, which is the biggest issue. The rule regarding borders is simply to keep the image big enough to build a banner -- in your case, the image is 1023 px wide, which is only 1 pixel short, no big deal, but the border would need to be cropped off for a banner, so the usable width is a lot less.

The 'no text' rule isn't so much of a deal-breaker, some classic shots from past comps wouldn't work without a caption, it's just that the placement of the text can't interfere with the banner. In your case, it would just be cropped off.

The rule against borders wouldn't be needed if people understood that the border can't be included in the banner, otherwise you'll end up with the top and bottom cropped off, and just dark lines down each side -- not a good look to head the forum for a month. If someone really, really needed to include a border to preserve their artistic integrity laugh.gif then the image width would need to be wide enough so that cutting the border off would still leave at least 1024px.

Since this complicated things a lot, there's just one simple rule regarding borders -- don't use them.

If this is truly the only version of this image you have, then you should pick another.

EDIT -- and Doug's decision is in.

Seneca (from Carenado fittingly enough!) in inverted spin over Ashburton Racetrack - I wanted to give the idea of panic, the rotation of the spin, the shuddering of the aircraft and the gradual loss of vision due to the spin forces acting on the pilot - he looks a goner, but I did recover though admittedly at a very low height! Actually it was pretty difficult to make this aircraft even stay in a benign inverted incipient spin so recovery was pretty fast.
